Field note 002Crawl to referral

ChatGPT reads your site 52 timesfor every visitor it sends.

Between 10 July 2026 and 8 October 2026, the typical small business website that got any ChatGPT visitors received 52 requests from OpenAI’s crawlers for each person ChatGPT sent to it. For Perplexity the figure was 90. AI assistants read a lot more of your site than they send back, so a rising crawler count on its own says little about visitors.

Crawler requests per visitor

How many times AI assistants read a small business site for each visitor they send

Half of the sites with ChatGPT visitors fell between 20 and 168 OpenAI requests per visitor. Counting only the two crawlers that fetch a page to answer someone’s question, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, the typical site got 28 per visitor; the rest is GPTBot collecting training data.

ChatGPT reached far more sites: 83% got at least one ChatGPT visitor in the window, against 24% for Perplexity. The typical site with Perplexity visitors had 2 of them in three months, so its ratio moves a lot with a single visit.

What this means for a small business
  • Crawler counts are an input, not a result. A tool that reports AI crawler activity as visibility is counting the reading, not the visitors.
  • Measure visits from each assistant in your analytics, and compare a site with itself over time. The ratio varies widely between sites, so another site's number is a poor benchmark for yours.
  • Fewer crawler requests do not mean fewer visitors. When ChatGPT's referral tags went missing in October 2026, visits looked like they fell while reads barely moved; see field note 001.
Not in this cut
  • Claude. Most visitors from claude.ai arrive without a referrer, so Claude visits are undercounted and the ratio would come out far too high.
  • Google's AI answers. Gemini and AI Overviews read pages through Google's search index, not a crawler of their own, so there is no matching crawler count.
  • By industry and by page type. Both need every site and every page labelled first; they will follow as a second cut.
Method
Crawler requests

Requests from each company's crawlers in the small business websites' own server logs: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User for OpenAI, and PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User for Perplexity. Our tracker also writes one fetcher line for every referral visit; those are removed first.

Visitors

One row per person arriving from an assistant, from the same sites' referral logs: utm_source or referrer chatgpt.com for ChatGPT, perplexity.ai for Perplexity.

Window

10 July 2026 to 8 October 2026, 91 days. It stops the day before ChatGPT's referral tags went missing on 9 October 2026, which would have inflated the ChatGPT ratio.

Sites and medians

Sites logged on at least 80 of the 91 days. Each site's ratio is its own crawler requests divided by its own visitors from that assistant; the figure is the median across sites with at least one such visitor.
