ChatGPT visits your site half as often. It sends 115% more traffic.

Across 724 small business websites, ChatGPT opened pages 4,378 times a day from 12 to 25 October 2026, down 50% from 8,817 a day from 20 July to 2 August 2026. Over the same weeks, visitors arriving from ChatGPT more than doubled. ChatGPT appears to search the web less and answer more from pages OpenAI already has stored, so a quieter ChatGPT bot in your logs no longer means fewer visitors.

That is the median site, comparing 12 to 25 October 2026 with 20 July to 2 August 2026. Of the sites ChatGPT read at least 20 times in late July, 262 fell and 65 rose. All 724 sites combined went from 8,817 to 4,378 reads a day. The fall came in two steps, on 20 August and on 17 to 18 September 2026, after a short spike from 9 to 19 August. OpenAI announced neither step. Visitors from ChatGPT climbed the whole time: +115% in total, and +50% at the typical site.

The drop holds on any window we compare

Two weeks against two weeks can flatter a trend, so we checked longer and shorter cuts. Every one points the same way, on roughly four sites for each one that rose.

  • Five weeks before the August spike against five weeks after the September step (6 July to 9 August vs 21 September to 25 October 2026): 9,362 to 3,894 reads a day on 587 sites, −58%.
  • The 17 to 18 September step on its own (4 to 17 September vs 19 September to 2 October 2026): −39% at the typical site across 955 sites, 393 down and 85 up, while visitors from ChatGPT rose 13%.
  • Reach did not move. ChatGPT read between 450 and 497 of the 587 sites every week from July to October. It opens fewer pages on each, not fewer sites.
Why it may be happening
  • ChatGPT searches the web less. Ahrefs found that only 14.4% of 66.6 million free, logged-out ChatGPT answers in August and September 2026 contained fan-out queries, the web searches ChatGPT runs to build an answer. Fewer searches mean fewer pages to open.
  • ChatGPT answers more from pages OpenAI already holds. OpenAI's help center describes an offline web search mode that answers from OpenAI's indexed and cached copies of pages instead of fetching live. Whether everyday ChatGPT now leans on that store more is not confirmed.
  • It started earlier on big sites. Botify measured ChatGPT-User down 28% between December 2025 and March 2026 across about 7 billion log lines from enterprise websites.
What this means for a small business
  • A quieter ChatGPT bot in your server logs is not lost ground. Judge ChatGPT by the visitors it sends, not by how often it reads your pages.
  • Being recommended depends less on ChatGPT opening your page at the moment someone asks, and more on what it already holds about your business.
  • Visitor counts for 8 to 15 October 2026 are low because ChatGPT's links lost their tracking tag that week; see field note 001.
Not in this cut
  • OpenAI's index crawler doing the reading instead. OAI-SearchBot rose 40% in total on the same sites, but the typical site's fell 6%, so we do not claim it.
  • Requests blocked before they reach the site. A firewall or CDN that turns ChatGPT away is invisible here, so the count is a floor.
  • Other assistants. Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI answers are not part of this cut.
Method
Reads

Requests carrying OpenAI's ChatGPT-User agent, which ChatGPT sends to open a page while answering someone, in the small business websites' own server logs. Our tracker also writes one ChatGPT-User line for every ChatGPT visitor; those are removed first, or the rise in visitors would hide part of the drop.

Visitors

One row per person arriving from a ChatGPT link carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com, from the same sites' referral logs. Clicks without the tag are not counted.

Windows

20 July to 2 August 2026 against 12 to 25 October 2026, 14 days each, on the 724 sites with data in both. Reads are counted per logged day, so a site that missed days is not counted as quiet. The weekly chart uses the 587 sites logged on 100 or more of the 112 days from 6 July 2026 to 25 October 2026.

Medians

Each site compared with itself. Read medians use sites with at least 20 reads in late July, visitor medians sites with at least 5 visits, so a handful of very large sites cannot carry the result.
