Here's What's Actually Happening
Search is shifting from blue links to AI-generated answers. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity don't parse your hero images and CSS animations. They want structured data, clean text, and JSON-LD schema.
An AI-first view is a lightweight, parallel version of your pages built for bots. It re-organizes your existing content into a structure machines can digest — different formatting and flow, same underlying information. Crucially, both versions live at accessible URLs. Humans and bots alike can reach either one. Humans simply have no reason to visit the machine-readable version, just like you have no reason to open the XML sitemap your SEO plugin generates.

Google's Dynamic Rendering documentation includes a dedicated section titled "Dynamic rendering is not cloaking":

In other words, Google expects you to provide machine-friendly alternatives when your visual layer makes content difficult for crawlers to parse. That is exactly what an AI-first view does.
Google even addresses paywalled content with the same logic: showing crawlers a version they can fully access while formatting the human version differently is fine, as long as the underlying content matches.

A common question is how bots find the AI-first view.

Hreflang tags serve different language versions of the same content to users in different regions.
The principle is always the same. A public link says "here is an alternative version of this page." There is nothing to detect because nothing is hidden.

For developers managing the SEO health of a WordPress site, here are the mechanisms that keep this approach bulletproof.
Canonical tags. Every AI-first page includes a canonical tag pointing back to the original WordPress URL.
