llms.txt generator and checker

Check the llms.txt file your site serves, and get a clean one built from your own pages.

We check yoursite.com/llms.txt and build a new one from your own pages. Nothing on your site is changed.

How to use this llms.txt generator and checker

One run answers two questions: does your site really serve an llms.txt file, and what should one say. It takes about twenty seconds.

  1. Enter your domain

Type your site's address. We fetch yoursite.com/llms.txt and yoursite.com/llms-full.txt from our servers. Nothing on your site changes.

  2. Read the check

We tell you whether a real text file answers, or a 404 page, a homepage redirect or a bot wall. Then we check the format line by line.

  3. Take the generated file

We read your homepage navigation and XML sitemap, fetch your key pages and list each by its own title and meta description.

  4. Publish and recheck

Copy or download it, upload it to your site root or switch on a plugin, then run the check again to confirm it loads as plain text.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of your site, at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that lists the pages you most want a language model to read, with a one-line note on each.

Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024, and the format lives at llmstxt.org. The idea is sound: a web page is mostly navigation, scripts and footer links wrapped around a little content, so a clean index saves a model the work of digging.

It is not a permission file. It cannot allow or block a crawler, which is the job of robots.txt (test yours with the robots.txt checker for AI crawlers). It is not a sitemap either, and it is not a formal standard: no search engine has committed to reading it.

llms.txt format: what the checker looks for

The format has one required part, an H1 with your site or project name. Everything else is optional but expected: a blockquote summary, then H2 sections holding Markdown link lists in the form - [name](url): notes. A section called Optional marks links a reader can skip when it is short on space.

Found, served as text

The file loads with a 200 and a text/plain or text/markdown content type. This is what you want. The rest of the checks look at what is inside it.

HTML page instead of a file

The address loads, but with your theme's 404 page or a redirect to the homepage. Many site owners believe they have a file because the URL does not error. Publish the generated file or switch the plugin option on.

Not found

A plain 404. Nothing is broken and nothing is lost. If you want a file, the generated one is ready to publish.

Refused or bot wall

A firewall, security plugin or bot-protection service answered instead. If it blocks us it may block other readers, so allow /llms.txt through. Open the file in a private window to confirm.

Missing H1 or sections

The file needs one H1 with your site name, then H2 sections with Markdown link lists. Bare URLs and links without names are flagged so you can rewrite them as [Page name](https://...).

Dead links

We sample up to ten links and request each one. A 404 means the file lists a page that no longer exists, which is the most common way these files go wrong.

We also report the file size, whether every link is an absolute URL on your own domain, duplicate links, whether robots.txt disallows the file, and the generator stamp when a plugin signed the file (All in One SEO, for example, writes a “Generated by” line). What we cannot check: whether any AI system has read your file. That only shows in server logs.

llms.txt example

A small business file looks like this. The generator writes the same shape from your own pages: Main pages, Services or Products, Blog posts, then Optional.

# Acme Plumbing

> Emergency and scheduled plumbing across Greater Leeds, established 1994.

## Services

- [Emergency callouts](https://acme.example/emergency): 24/7 response across Leeds.
- [Boiler servicing](https://acme.example/boilers): Annual servicing and certification.

## Main pages

- [About us](https://acme.example/about): Who we are and the areas we cover.
- [Contact](https://acme.example/contact): Phone, email and opening hours.

## Optional

- [Privacy policy](https://acme.example/privacy)

Keep the notes factual and short, use full https:// addresses, and list pages people would actually want: services, prices, locations, key guides. A file of fifty tag archive links helps no one.

What is llms-full.txt?

llms-full.txt inlines the full text of your pages into one file, so an agent makes one request instead of following every link. It is not part of the llms.txt proposal: it grew out of documentation platforms and spread by imitation. The proposal itself suggests a clean Markdown copy of each page at the same address with .md added.

For a documentation site it can be worth publishing. For a local business or a blog, llms.txt on its own is plenty. The checker tells you whether you serve one, and does not mark you down if you do not.

How to create llms.txt on WordPress

Let a plugin serve it

The easiest route, because it stays in step as you publish. LovedByAI's plugin builds one automatically, and Yoast, Rank Math and All in One SEO each have an llms.txt option.

Upload a static file

Download the generated file and upload it over SFTP or your host's file manager to the folder that holds wp-config.php. It will not update itself, so recheck it now and then.

Then confirm it loads

Open yoursite.com/llms.txt in a private window, or run this check again. You should see plain text, not a styled page. Security plugins sometimes block the address.

Plugins are why most of these files exist. In our September 2026 check of 4,787 US and UK agency websites, 26% served an llms.txt, and 800 of those 1,247 files (64%) carried a plugin's generator stamp. Adoption follows plugin defaults more than decisions.

On Shopify, Wix, Squarespace or Webflow, check whether your platform or an app can serve a file at the root. Where it cannot, llms.txt is not worth a workaround.

llms.txt generator and validator questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain Markdown file served at the root of a website, at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that lists the pages a site owner most wants language models to read, each with a short note. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024 at llmstxt.org. It is a proposal rather than a formal standard, and it does not control crawler access the way robots.txt does.

How do I create an llms.txt file?

Enter your domain in the generator at the top of this page. It reads your homepage navigation and XML sitemap, fetches your key pages, and writes a file using each page's own title and meta description. Copy or download it, upload it to your site root so it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt, then run the check again to confirm it is served as plain text.

What is the llms.txt format?

An llms.txt file opens with one H1 heading holding the site or project name, the only required part. An optional blockquote summary follows, then optional paragraphs, then H2 sections that each hold a Markdown list of links written as - [Page name](https://url): optional note. A section titled Optional marks links a reader can skip when space is short.

How do I add llms.txt to WordPress?

On WordPress, either let a plugin serve llms.txt or upload a static file. LovedByAI's plugin generates one automatically, and Yoast, Rank Math and All in One SEO have an llms.txt option. For a static file, upload llms.txt over SFTP to the folder that holds wp-config.php. Either way, open yoursite.com/llms.txt in a private window to confirm it shows plain text, not your theme's 404 page.

What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

llms.txt is a short index that links to your key pages. llms-full.txt inlines the full text of those pages into one file, so an agent can read everything in a single request. llms-full.txt is not part of the llms.txt proposal; it spread from documentation platforms. It is mainly useful for developer documentation, and most business websites do not need one.

Do ChatGPT and other AI crawlers read llms.txt?

AI crawlers almost never request llms.txt. Across 82 million crawler requests to WordPress sites logged by LovedByAI between December 2025 and 24 May 2026, AI bots fetched an llms.txt file 31 times in total, and GPTBot fetched one once. The file is cheap and harmless to publish, but crawler access, clear page content and structured data are what get a site into AI answers.

Why does my llms.txt checker result say HTML page?

An HTML page result means yoursite.com/llms.txt loads, but with a web page rather than a text file. Usually it is your theme's 404 page served with a 200 status, or a redirect to your homepage. There is no llms.txt on the site in that case, even though the address does not error. Publish the generated file or turn on your plugin's llms.txt option, then check again.

llms.txt is the small part. Check the rest.
