ChatGPT visibility checker
We ask the real ChatGPT the one question your next customer is most likely to type, such as “Can you recommend a good roofer in Austin?”, and a sharper second one only if it names nobody. 10 to 40 seconds.
What is a ChatGPT visibility checker?
A ChatGPT visibility checker, a kind of AI visibility checker, tells you whether ChatGPT names your business when a customer asks it for what you sell. Rankings and traffic charts can't show you that. The only way to know is to ask the assistant the customer's question and read the answer.
That is what this free tool does. It asks the real ChatGPT, with web search on, the question a customer of your business would ask, then shows whether ChatGPT recommended you, recommended someone else, or pointed to directories instead. People searching for an “LLM visibility checker” or a “ChatGPT visibility” test usually want exactly this: one straight answer from the assistant itself.
It matters because the audience is large and the visits are good. OpenAI said on 31 March 2026 that ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly active users. Semrush's AI search traffic study (July 2025) found an AI search visitor converts at 4.4 times the rate of a traditional organic visitor.
How the ChatGPT visibility checker works
Four steps, 10 to 40 seconds, most of it ChatGPT searching the web.
Enter your domain
Type your website address. We only need the domain; the checker reads your homepage to learn what you sell and where.
We write the customer's question
One short question a ready-to-buy customer would ask, in your site's language, naming your city if you are local. Never your brand name.
We ask the real ChatGPT
The question goes to ChatGPT with web search switched on, the same way a customer would ask it, and we collect every site it links to.
You see who it recommends
Your site, other businesses, or nobody at all. Competitors are shown as plain text with every source ChatGPT cited.
The question is the whole experiment, so we are strict about it. It is the single most likely thing a customer types when they are ready to buy what you mainly sell, not a sideline. It asks for a business, never a person, because assistants decline to recommend individual doctors or lawyers but will name practices and firms. It is short and uses the words a customer owns rather than trade jargon. A roofing company in Fort Worth gets something like who does roof replacement in Fort Worth, and a site written in Hebrew gets a question in Hebrew.
It never contains your brand name. Somebody who has not found you yet cannot type it, and a question with your name in it would only prove that ChatGPT can look you up.
Why the checker asks one question, not a hundred
Most businesses care about one answer above all: the one ChatGPT gives when a customer is ready to buy what they mainly sell. That is the question this checker asks.
AI visibility platforms track hundreds of prompts across several assistants, every week, for a monthly fee. That is a different job: monitoring a brand over time. This is a free, quick answer to the question that decides most sales, such as Can you recommend a good roofer in Austin? for a roofing company. If ChatGPT names nobody for it, we ask one sharper version, because a single answer that names nobody tells you nothing.
We read the question off your homepage, so it is about what you lead with. If your site blocks requests from our servers, you type what you sell and where instead, and we ask from that.
What your ChatGPT visibility result means
ChatGPT recommends you
Its answer linked to your site. Keep crawler access open and your service pages current, because the answer is re-made every time somebody asks.
ChatGPT recommended other businesses
A customer asking this question is sent to the businesses listed. Look at the sources it cited: those are the pages it read to decide, and the places to be named.
ChatGPT pointed to directories
It answered with listings, guides or articles but no business's own site. Nobody owns the answer yet, so there is room to be the business it names.
ChatGPT didn't name any business
It answered from memory or sent the customer to a search page. You are not in the answer, and neither is anyone else yet. Check your crawler access and the steps below.
If we can't work out a question at all, your homepage isn't saying clearly what you sell or where. An AI assistant reading the same page has the same problem.
Why ChatGPT's answer changes from run to run
ChatGPT's answers are not deterministic. Ask the same question twice and you can get different businesses, or none.
We measured this ourselves in September 2026. The identical question about hardwood floor refinishing in Laurel, Maryland, asked three times in a row, named no business at all on one call and four real businesses on the other two. That is why this checker asks a second, differently worded question when the first one gets no answer, and why one result is a sample, not a ranking.
Your own ChatGPT may also answer differently because of your location, your chat history, memory and the model you use. We keep each site's answer for 6 hours, so a re-check inside that window shows the same result rather than spending another call.
How ChatGPT search picks the businesses it recommends
With web search on, ChatGPT runs its own searches, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer with links. The links are the recommendation. It reads pages through OpenAI's crawlers, and OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Ranking on Google does not carry over the way you might expect. Ahrefs looked at 15,000 long-tail queries (August 2025) and found only 8% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. ChatGPT tends to cite pages that answer the question directly, on sites it can read and trust, and the directories and articles other people wrote about the business.
Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews each use their own crawlers and indexes, so being recommended by one is a good sign for the others but not a guarantee. This checker asks ChatGPT only.
How to get recommended by ChatGPT
There is no form to submit. These are the things that move the answer.
1. Let AI crawlers in. Check that robots.txt and your firewall let OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User fetch your pages. The robots.txt checker tests GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the other AI crawlers. A minimal rule for ChatGPT looks like this:
# Let ChatGPT search and ChatGPT's live fetches read your site User-agent: OAI-SearchBot Allow: / User-agent: ChatGPT-User Allow: /
2. Make the entity obvious. Your business name, what you do, the city you serve, phone and address, in plain text near the top of the homepage and repeated in LocalBusiness or Organization schema.
3. Write answer-first pages. One page per main service that answers the customer's question in its opening paragraph, then backs it up with prices, areas and proof.
4. Add structured data. Schema states who you are in a form machines don't have to guess at. The schema markup generator builds it from your page.
5. Get cited by others. The sources in your result are the pages ChatGPT read to decide. Being listed, reviewed and mentioned on them is how a business gets pulled into the answer.

Improving ChatGPT visibility on a WordPress site
AI crawlers already visit small business WordPress sites heavily. In our crawl data from 6 September to 5 October 2026, across 924 WordPress sites, AI crawlers made more requests than Googlebot on 79% of small business sites. They are reading; the question is what they find.
A common reason a WordPress site stays invisible is a security plugin or host firewall that blocks unfamiliar bots. After that it is content and markup. In our study of 116 WordPress sites and 108,834 pages (August 2026), optimized pages earned 173.5 AI referral visits per 1,000 pages over 90 days against 15.8 for untouched pages on the same sites, about 11 times more. It is an association, not proof of cause, and the full study explains the method.
LovedByAI is a generative engine optimization plugin for small business WordPress sites. It automates the on-page work that makes a site readable and recommendable by AI assistants, and reports AI mentions and AI referral traffic back.
What this checker can't tell you
One question, one assistant, one moment. It does not track you over time, test Claude, Perplexity or Gemini, or tell you how often your customers actually ask. For the reasons behind a result, run the full AI readiness check, which scores crawler access, content, schema and speed in one scan.
ChatGPT visibility checker questions
01How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Enter your domain in the ChatGPT visibility checker at the top of this page. It reads your homepage, writes the one question a ready-to-buy customer would most likely ask, puts it to the real ChatGPT with web search on, and shows whether the answer linked to your site, to other businesses, or to directories only. It takes 10 to 40 seconds.
02Is this ChatGPT visibility checker free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no card. Each check asks ChatGPT a real question, so it is limited to 5 checks an hour per visitor, and each site's answer is kept for 6 hours.
03Why does the checker ask only one question?
Because one question decides most sales: the one a ready-to-buy customer types when they want what you mainly sell, such as "Can you recommend a good roofer in Austin?". The checker asks that one, and a sharper second version only when ChatGPT names nobody. It is a quick, honest answer to the question that matters most, not a tracker for hundreds of prompts.
04Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors instead of me?
Usually one of four things: AI crawlers are blocked from your site by robots.txt or a firewall, your pages don't say plainly what you do and where, there is no page that answers the customer's question directly, or the directories and articles ChatGPT reads mention your competitors and not you. The sources listed in your result show where it looked.
05Why did ChatGPT give me a different answer when I asked it myself?
ChatGPT's answers are not deterministic. The same question can name different businesses, or none, from one run to the next. Your own location, chat history, memory and model also change what you see. Treat one result as a sample, not a fixed ranking.
06How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Let OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User crawl your site, state your business name, service, city and contact details in plain text and in schema markup, publish a page per main service that answers the customer's question in its first paragraph, and get listed and reviewed on the directories and articles ChatGPT cites for your category.
07What is AI visibility, or AI brand visibility?
Both mean how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention or recommend your brand when people ask about what you sell. This checker measures one slice of it: whether ChatGPT recommends you for the single question your customers are most likely to ask.
08Does ranking on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
Not necessarily. In an Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries published in August 2025, only 8% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Strong Google rankings help, but ChatGPT runs its own searches and picks its own sources.
09Does the ChatGPT visibility checker work for any website?
It works for any public website, WordPress or not. If your site blocks requests from our servers, which firewalls often do, the checker asks you what you sell and where, and asks ChatGPT from that. It suits businesses that sell a service or product customers ask for, not personal blogs.
